Whole Wheat and Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Today I looked at Buddy and thought “I need to make him something special”.  He loves cookies, so I made him his own homemade cookies.

The recipe is very easy and can usually be made with ingredients that I always have in the kitchen.  I am much happier knowing exactly what is in his treats and food, so this gives me the opportunity to make him something good with good ingredients, and no fillers and no mystery chemicals.  When is comes to the peanut butter, use a popular brand like Skippy or Jiff, the natural and organic ones separate and could make a mess.  This recipe comes from Ina Garten, or course.

When I gave Buddy his first homemade cookie, he took it and gave me that look that said “I love you, Man”, he started to walk out of the kitchen to eat it and stopped and looked back at me with that “I love you, Man” look again and I know he meant it. He is one happy dog, but then he always is.

Makes 12 to 36 biscuits, depending on cookie cutter size

Ingredients:

1½-cups stone-ground whole wheat flour
1-cup all-purpose flour
½-cup powdered or dry milk
½-cup quick-cooking oatmeal, plus extra for sprinkling
½-cup smooth peanut butter
2-tablespoons toasted wheat germ
1-extra-large egg, lightly beaten                                                 .       1-Cup Water
1-egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water for egg wash

Directions:

1.  Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

2.  In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the two flours, the powdered milk, oatmeal, peanut butter, and wheat germ. With the mixer on low speed, add the egg and 1 cup of water and mix just until it forms a slightly sticky ball.

3.  Dump the dough out on a well-floured board (I use all-purpose flour) and knead it into a ball. Roll the dough out ½-inch thick. Dip the cookie cutters in flour and cut out dog bone shapes. Collect the scraps, knead lightly, roll out again, and cut more dog biscuits.

4.  Place the biscuits on the prepared sheet pan and brush with the egg wash. Sprinkle with oatmeal and bake for 1 hour, until completely hard. Cool and toss.
